IBM Connections 5.5 and a new Desktop Plug-In for Windows

A great new feature is coming with IBM Connections 5.5 >>

NESTED FOLDERS.

With this feature you can build your folder structure inside your personal and also inside the Communities files. Now you can use IBM Connections Files as replacement for your home folder on a file server ( as I do ). Of course you also could use tagging, but I always had to discuss this missing feature with some users at customers.

For integration in the Windows Explorer a new plugin is available on the Solutions Catalog. In this plugin the "nested folder structure" is included.

Of course there are a lot of additional features as you can see in the blog of Luis Benitez. There you also can take a look of the new functionalities of IBM Docs 2.0

Domino ODS conversion with program document

Yesterday I had to upgrade mail databases to the latest ODS without using DBMT ( which does this challenge per default ), because DBMT has not to be used in the customers environment. Don´t ask me, why...

To speed up the conversion and to be sure, that the database can be compacted "copy-style", I created multiple text files (ods_conversion_1.txt, ods_conversion_2.txt, .. .) with the following entries:

   drop mail\maildb1.nsf
   lo compact mail\maildb1.nsf -ODS
   drop mail\maildb2.nsf
   lo compact mail\maildb2.nsf -ODS

Afterwards I created program documents to run multiple conversion tasks simultaneously:

With this way all databases have been converted to ODS 52 and it could be planned very easy.

Adding owner to an IBM Connections Activity

I had the issue, that a user on a customer´s site left the company and his activities had to be switched to another user due to inactivation of this user. A great help was the IBM CNX Wiki.

Here are the steps I did and they worked fine for me:

Access the Activities environment via the WSADMIN platform

Change to the "bin" directory of your Deployment Manager and execute the following statements:

wsadmin -lang jython -user wasadmin -password Passw0rd -port 8879
execfile("activitiesAdmin.py")

Get the ID of the activity
wsadmin>ActivityService.fetchActivities()

[{createdBy=Rainer Brandl, name=Demo_Transfer, activityId=7eee84c2-080e-44b0-b7ec-27d51e52cbd3, modifiedBy=Rainer Brandl, isCompleted=false, flags=0, modifiedDate=09. November 2015 07:45:55 CET, isTemplate=false, isDeleted=false, isInternal
=true, createdDate=09. November 2015 07:45:55 CET},.....

In this list you only have to check the name of the activity and the field "activityId" and put this ID into a variable ( I used "ex_employee_activities" )

ex_employee_activities=ActivityService.fetchActivityById("7eee84c2-080e-44b0-b7ec-27d51e52cbd3")

Then you just put the additional owner´s mail address of the activity in a variable
newmember=ActivitiesMemberService.fetchMemberByEmail("firstname.lastname@company.com")

Now you have to do some vector actions to add the new owner into the activity

from java.util import Vector
newmembervec=Vector()

   >> this entry creates a new vector for the additional owner
newmembervec.add(newmember)

   >> this entry puts the entry from the variable "newmember" to this vector
actvec = Vector()

   >> this entry creates a new vector inside the variable
actvec.add(ex_employee_activities)

   >> this entry puts the selected activity into this vector

Add the new owner to the activity
AccessControlService.setOwnersAccess(actvec,newmembervec)

IBM Notes Traveler is syncing only one time

During this week we found a strange issue regarding a Traveler sync. This would especially be for german speaking colleagues:

If the name of a mail database contains special characters like "ä", "ö", "ü" or "ß", you will be able
to do a primesync with your device, but we saw, that no more changes or new mails will be synched to the device.

Our solution:
- Create a replica of the mail database without a special character
- Stop the router task
- Modify the person document
- Modify the settings in the location document of the Notes Client
- Start the router task
- Do a "te traveler security delete device-id username" on the Notes Traveler Server
- Reconfigure the Traveler Client on the device
- Ready

After those steps all synchronisation tasks were working fine. This should be fixed in Traveler 8.5.2, but happened this week with 9.0.1.8

Domino 9.0.1 FP4 / Potential server crash in SECFreeSSOInternetSitesConfig due to missing file

In the Fixpack 4 for IBM Domino 9.0.1 there´s a bug which could cause a server crash.
Today there´s a Hot Fix available on IBM Fix Central !!!

There is a potential regression in Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4 that could result in a server crash on all platforms except IBM i. See the crash stack below for the exact pattern produced in NSD log. This issue is being tracked under SPR# RSOI9Y7BZW (APAR LO85557). The root cause was the Fix Pack not updating the file 'server' on all Unix platforms and 'nserver.exe' on Windows platforms.

This issue does not impact Notes clients or Notes Browser Plug-in.

Fix Details
A fix for this issue is now available via Interim Fix 1 for Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4. For download links, see technote 1657963.

The same fix will also be delivered in a slipstreamed version of Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4. A slipstream is a re-posting of a newer package with no changes to the version number. The ETA for the slipstream is between July 14th and 15th.

Note the following:
-- Customers who download and install Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4 after the slipstream package is posted will not be affected.

-- Customers who have already installed the original Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4 should address the issue by installing 9.0.1 Fix Pack 4 Interim Fix 1, which addresses SPR RSOI9Y7BZW. (Note: This Interim Fix also addresses logging issue CSMH9M2JXL described in technote #1960516)

Domino SAML authentication and ADFS certificate

A colleague found out, that the certificate on the ADFS server has a automatic rollover and per default is valid for 1 year.

But after the rollover of the key the SAML authentication does not work anymore for IBM Notes clients. There´s a quite simple solution

>> "Re-Download" the "FederationMetadata.xml" file from the ADFS server and reimport this file in >> the IdPCat configuration.

Afterwards SAML authentication is working fine again.

IBM Connections / IBM Docs - DataSources

Yesterday I had the issue during an implementation if IBM Docs 1.0.7, that the node for the Docs server had different partitions than the Deployment Manager.

Deployment Manager partitions: C: / D:
Node for IBM Connections servers: C: / D:
Node for IBM Docs partitions: C: / E:

I found out that the IBM Docs server have troubles by connecting to the DB2 datasources because of the "missing" JDBC drivers. It looked that the Docs server were looking in the same place like the JDBC drivers are located on the node of the IBM Connections servers ( D:/IBM/SQLLIB/java ).

But no chance to modify the drive letters. Searching for a solution I came to this tiny tool >>

Visual Subst

With this tool you are able to "mount" D: like E:. After adding this substitution everything worked fine.

IBM File Viewer 1.0.7 available for download

Since March 11th, the new version of the File Viewer is available in the Solutions Catalog

IBM File Viewer provides a high-fidelity viewer for IBM Connections files and community files in the web user interface. It also allows IBM iNotes users to view attachments within the browser -- without installing document processing or viewing software, and without having to download the file to the user's workstation.

You can view files directly within the IBM Connections Files and Communities applications. Supported Open Document files include word processing documents (.odt), spreadsheets (.ods), and presentations (.odp). You can also view Adobe PDF and the Microsoft™ equivalents of these file types – Word (.doc and .docx), Excel (.xls and .xlsx), PowerPoint (.ppt and .pptx).
By viewing an uploaded file from within IBM Connections, you can see the file contents without having to download the file. You can also navigate within the file, zoom, go to specific pages, play a slide show, print and more.

The IBM File Viewer 1.0.7 supports IBM Connections 5.0, CR1 and CR2 with thumbnail view feature, and it also supports IBM Connections 4.5 CR4 and CR5.

For additional details about installing and using this viewer with IBM Connections, please see this knowledge center.

When using with IBM iNotes, no additional configuration is needed by the end user. An IBM iNotes Administrator first needs to enable and configure the File Viewer on their Domino Server. Once that step is complete, IBM iNotes users will see a "View" option on the Attachments toolbar or when they right mouse click on a file.  By clicking the "View" option, IBM iNotes users can view received attachments directly without downloading, saving or opening the file. For IBM iNotes, the IBM File Viewer supports the same types of files listed above, although this list could be restricted by iNotes administrator.

For additional information about installing and using this viewer with IBM iNotes, please see this wiki documentation.

Installing JVM Patch on Domino with Notes Client

First of all >> thanks a lot to Ulrich Krause for posting this helpful article.

For some reasons, some customer also have the IBM Notes Client installed on the same server where they run the IBM Domino Server. If you try to install the JVM Patch, the installer always comes back with the directory of the IBM Notes Client and you´re unable to install the JVM patch to the Domino Server.

Regarding the hint of eknori you can do this the following way:

D:\temp\jvmpatch>9.0.1.3_Server_w64_JVM_Patch_20150303_142312.exe LAX_VM d:\domino_program_directory\jvm\bin\java.exe -D$USER_INSTALL_DIR$=d:\domino_program_directory

 It´s working great !!! Thanks again !!

Microsoft is killing off the Internet Explorer brand ( IE will live on, but only as plumbing for Windows )

http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/17/8230631/microsoft-is-killing-off-the-internet-explorer-brand

While Microsoft has dropped hints that the Internet Explorer brand is going away, the software maker has now confirmed that it will use a new name for its upcoming browser successor, codenamed Project Spartan. Speaking at Microsoft Convergence yesterday, Microsoft's marketing chief Chris Capossela revealed that the company is currently working on a new name and brand. "We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10," said Capossela. "We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing."

Internet Explorer will still exist in some versions of Windows 10 mainly for enterprise compatibility, but the new Project Spartan will be named separately and will be the primary way for Windows 10 users to access the web. Microsoft has tried, unsuccessfully, to shake off the negative image of Internet Explorer over the past several years with a series of amusing campaigns mocking Internet Explorer 6. The ads didn't improve the situation, and Microsoft's former Internet Explorer chief left the company in December, signalling a new era for the browser.

Verge Video: The introduction of Project Spartan at the Windows 10 Event in January

Capossela also detailed the power of using the Microsoft brand over just Windows or Internet Explorer, and showed off some research data on a new name for the company’s browser vs. Internet Explorer. Putting Microsoft in front of the new secret name increased the appeal to some Chrome users in the UK. "Just by putting the Microsoft name in front of it, the delta for Chrome users on appeal is incredibly high," says Capossela.

MS chrome data

Microsoft is clearly testing names with market research, but it’s unclear when the company plans to unveil the final name for its Internet Explorer successor. Judging by Microsoft’s own research, it’s obvious the company will move as far away from Internet Explorer as possible, and it’s likely Project Spartan will have the Microsoft name attached to it.

Elsewhere in Capossela’s talk, the Microsoft executive also discussed the ways the company will make money in future, and clever ways the company is making use of social media. Microsoft has started to use artists to respond to Twitter users with personalised images, and at least one from the Xbox team was successful at creating attention with an impressive 35,000 retweets. It’s all part of improving Microsoft’s brand perception, and a general admission from the company that it’s ready to be loved again.

Call "WSADMIN" for IBM Connections

Due to a lot of customizations in IBM Connections you always have to check out some configurations files ( .xml ) with WSADMIN.

If you do not want to enter the "wsadmin" command every time ( like me ), you can create a batch or cmd file including the following statements:

d:
cd \IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\ic-dmgr01\bin\
wsadmin -lang jython -user wasadmin -password Passw0rd -port 8879

You only have to customize the drive and path for your DMGR and the password, save it on the desktop and you´re ready to go. I also uploaded the batch file I use on dropbox. Feel free to download the file here

Warning – Microsofts Outlook app for iOS and Android breaks your company security

Regarding the blog of René Winkelmeyer there are security holes in the Outlook for iOS and Android clients which was released on Thursday, January 29th. René checked the client and found out following security breaks ( thanks to René for posting ):

File sharing capabilities

The app has built-in connectors to OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive. That means a user can setup his personal account within the app and share all mail attachments using those services. Or use files from those services within his company mail account. That’s a data security nightmare.

It doesn’t matter if you’re using a containerized solution like the Apple built-in separation of managed and unmanaged apps. The same applies to every other container. The communication is app-internal and you cannot control that.

Shared Exchange ActiveSync ID and device type

It gets even more worse. Each ActiveSync client normally has a unique ID for data synchronization. That allows administrators to distinguish a users devices. Microsofts Outlook iOS apps doesn’t work that way. The app shares the same ID across all devices of a user. And it seems like one device!

That means: If a user installs the Outlook app on his iPhone and on his iPad it’s seen as one device. There’s no way to distinguish if it’s an iPad or an iPhone. Nada. Niente. Using device approval on Traveler won’t help. It connects as “one device” – and you cannot control that. That’s a security nightmare.

Microsoft has your credentials

Now to the worst part: Microsoft will get and store your mail account credentials in the cloud if you use the iOS Outlook app.

When I setup the app I’ve been asked if I want to receive push notifications. As a “regular” user I accepted (click, click, OK). As an iOS developer I was wondering why the app wants to send me push notifications. Push notifications are normally triggered by a remote server. So I ran a quick test:
  • I stopped the app (removed it from the list of active devices).
  • I sent myself from another account a test mail.
  • I immediately received a push notification about new mail.

That could not be true. Either Microsoft was doing some magic iOS stuff that I’m not aware of. Or they are using a central service, using my credentials, to monitor my ActiveSync account. So time for another test:

  • I put all my devices in airplane mode. So there could be no communication.
  • I opened the access_log of my Apache server (which sits in front of my Traveler server).
  • There it was!

54.148.96.196 – – [29/Jan/2015:16:19:50 +0100] “POST /traveler/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync?User=mysupermail%40winkelmeyer.com&DeviceId=123123123123&DeviceType=Outlook&Cmd=Sync HTTP/1.1? 200 25 “-” “Outlook-iOS-Android/1.0?

What I saw was breathtaking. A frequent scanning from an AWS IP to my mail account. Means Microsoft stores my personal credentials and server data (luckily I’ve used my private test account and not my company account) somewhere in the cloud! They haven’t asked me. They just scan. So they have in theory full access to my PIM data.

Block them – NOW

The only advice I can give you at this stage is: block the app from accessing your companies mail servers. And inform your users that they shouldn’t use the app.

If you have a reverse proxy in front of your IBM Notes Traveler (or Exchange) server you can use a partial check on the HTTP User-Agent and block everything that contains “Outlook-iOS-Android”.
If you don’t have reverse proxy in front of IBM Notes Traveler you can use the Traveler settings to disallow this device type (i. e. using the notes.ini parameter “NTS_USER_AGENT_ALLOWED_REGEX”). You’ll find a detailed documentation how to handle this in the IBM Knowledge Center.

Also a great option to disable the access to your IBM Notes Traveler Server has been documented by Detlev Poettgen at his blog.

Or use their product midpoints traveler.rules which accomplishes the same (and more).

Update

It’s even worse (thanks @shadowBJ21 for pointing me to that). For those who don’t now: Microsoft has bought Acompli some time ago and “re-branded” their app to this new Outlook app.

“We provide a service that indexes and accelerates delivery of your email to your device. That means that our service retrieves your incoming and outgoing email messages and securely pushes them to the app on your device. Similarly, the service retrieves the calendar data and address book contacts associated with your email account and securely pushes those to the app on your device. Those messages, calendar events, and contacts, along with their associated metadata, may be temporarily stored and indexed securely both in our servers and locally on the app on your device. If your emails have attachments and you request to open them in our app, the service retrieves them from the mail server, securely stores them temporarily on our servers, and delivers them to the app.”

”If you decide to sign up to use the service, you will need to create an account. That requires that you provide the email address(es) that you want to access with our service. Some email accounts (ones that use Microsoft Exchange, for example) also require that you provide your email login credentials, including your username, password, server URL, and server domain. Other accounts (Google Gmail accounts, for example) use the OAuth authorization mechanism which does not require us to access or store your password.”

IBM CCM doesn´t display new created folders or files

Last week I had the issue, that I could not see a new created folder in the Connections CCM. The
browser looked the following:

But the created folder was correctly displayed in the MS Desktop Plugin:

After some investigation and also going through the logs of the CCM server, I found out, what caused the problem: it was the display option, why the file and the folder have not been displayed !! After switching from the preview list to the list option everything was displayed correctly:

Working as designed ???
