IBM Notes/Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 1 Preliminary Release Notice

IBM Notes/Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 1 Preliminary Release Notice
March 27, 2014

IBM has identified important Notes/Domino SPRs to be fixed in the latest Fix Pack release, 9.0.1 Fix Pack 1. This notice serves as the Preliminary Fix List. All fixes in this Fix Pack have been selected through our Triage process of high impacting customer requested bug fixes and are currently undergoing testing. IBM reserves the right to remove any fix from this targeted release if it does not pass quality engineering tests. Please consider this information to be provisional. Do not base irreversible business decisions on this information until the Fix Pack has been officially released.

The Notes/Domino Fix List website on developerWorks will show you the status of this Fix Pack on the Upcoming Releases tab. This preliminary Release Notice will be updated to include a more descriptive explanation of the problem and fix, where applicable. Also, a link to the technote and regression information will be provided.

Notes/Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 1 addresses defects in both the Client and Server. All Fix Packs are language independent and may be applied on any language version of Notes/Domino 9.0.1.

Decision to upgrade
Customers unable to upgrade to later Releases should install Fix Packs to benefit from later fixes made to the product. By providing a small number of fixes, customers are able to accept fewer code changes with lower risk, allowing them to "patch" an older Maintenance Release until a more extensive upgrade to the current Release is possible.

While Fix Packs provide important fixes and IBM strongly recommends applying the latest Fix Pack available for a Maintenance Release, IBM still recommends that customers upgrade to the latest Release + Fix Pack combination to receive the broadest set of fixes available. You will receive more overall fixes with a later Release + Fix Pack than with a set of Fix Packs on top of an earlier Maintenance Release. For more information, see technote #1368141-"Differences between Notes/Domino Maintenance Releases, Fix Packs and Upgrade Packs."

Fixes contained in this Fix Pack
A plus symbol (+) before the SPR number indicates a fix for a regression bug. A regression bug is an issue that was introduced in a Maintenance Release but did not exist in previous releases of that code stream. For example, a bug that appears in 9.0.1 but did not exist in 9.0.0 is a regression.
If an APAR exists for the corresponding SPR, the APAR number will appear in parentheses next to the SPR number. For example, SPR #nnnnnnnnnn (LO12345).

The Fix List database on developerWorks contains the description of each fix in this Fix Pack, and indicates which platform(s) have been fixed.

9.0.1 Fix Pack 1 Preliminary Fix List descriptions:

Client

  • NNBN9CCQXZ - Fixes issues that prevents a users from subscribing to feeds from Media Galleries
  • PALT8WXPLQ - Fixes an issue in function NSFItemConvertValueToText that would return the length up until NULL and not the entire length. if a NULL character was found in the middle of a rich text field
  • BJHW97BRN2 - Fixes issue when using Windows 7/8-64 bit and Internet Explorer 10 where Mailto: functionality errors with "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not installed properly"
  • +TAIA9A52V5 - Fixes the 2AM data purge logic to no longer always expect a handle to a cluster database so that non-clustered R&R servers can now purge old entries out of busytime. This is a regression in 9.0.
  • +CSYL9DG26X - Fixes issue where iCal PUBLISH events were not being converted properly by the Domino router. This conversion issue resulted in the inability for the end user to add the event to their Notes/Domino calendar. This is a regression in 9.0

Server

  • +WWHN95SM48 - Fixes Domino Server hang on shutdown when there is an abnormal termination of Mmc.Exe. This is a regression from 8.5.3 FP3
  • TTAN95TLQS - Fixes issue opening an iCal invitation the error message "Database already contains a document with this UNID" (technote 1648411)
  • KMUR7HNKAH - Fixes Domino Server crash on IMAP task with PANIC: OSBBlockAddr: Bad BBlock handle (7B0000) when there are a large set of documents to fetch (technote 1650301)
  • WWHN972KZR - Fixes Domino Server crash with Panic: Semaphore Invalid Or Not Allocated After Recovery Manager: Log File Is Full.
  • PPOR92UMM6 - Fixes issue when sending SMTP over SSL with: SSL handshake error: 1C7Bh and SSL bad peer certificate. This error occurs when an SSL implementation does not send the CA DN list during the certificate request phase. This fix allows the process to proceed. To revert to the old behavior, enable Notes.ini SSL_STRICT_V3=1. The default behavior is 0 or off.
  • +VPRS99XQ3L - Fixes Domino Server Crash on Sgmlparser::terminateparse when Data URL support is enabled. This is a regression in 9.0. (technote 1653683)
  • KHAN8L8W59 - Fixes issue that could result in a new profile document getting created in a user mail file with the server name as the owner. This would occur creating a new replica from one machine to another machine. This fix adds logic to prevent this condition and maintain the correct profile document.
  • JSTN8AALGW - Fixes Domino Server Crash with FTGGetLastIndexTime/GetIndexDir that only occurs when Fast Restart is enabled (technote 1654140)
  • SODY9DDBD5 - Fixes issue where IBM Domino applets will no longer work in browsers running a JVM at or beyond version 1.7u51. (technote 1662233)

iNotes

  • +SDOY8SSNU7 - Fixes iNotes issue with Windows 7 or Windows 8 where Send File as Attachment doesn't work when using language choice of French. This is a regression in 8.5.3.
  • NKEY9DCQP8 - Notes web: Fixes error when using Notes web with Firefox 26 where if multiple mail tabs are opened in Notes web, the tabs are blank and the iNotes error message "A problem has occurred which may have caused the current operation to fail" is received. (technote 1659371)
  • HPXG9A4C36 - Fixes issue in iNotes using Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11, where when previewing messages, user is always prompted to install iNotes Control, even though it was already installed.
  • +YBJH9EWB3K - Fixes issue where on Internet Explorer Name lookup does not work if the enter key is pressed after Chinese characters are input in the To, CC, or BCC fields. This is a regression in 9.0.1
  • SMAA9C9K9E - Fixes issue where after a user marks iNotes as default, a second user will not be able to mark iNotes as default (make default button is greyed out). This issue will also be seen if a user's primary mail server has changed, and the user now needs to access his mail file on a different server permanently
  • +JFOR9CDSTY - Fixes issue when using Internet Explorer where opening dropdowns while composing a mail has a flash (text goes white, then shows again) in the message body area. This is a regression in 9.0.1.

Zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Word under active attack

Source: arstechnica.com

Attackers are exploiting a newly discovered vulnerability in Microsoft Word that makes it possible to remotely seize control of computers, the company warned.
The in-the-wild attacks work by creating booby-trapped documents in the Rich Text Format (RTF) that exploit a vulnerability in the 2010 version of Microsoft Word, Microsoft warned in an advisory published Monday. Similar attacks work against other versions of Word, including 2003, 2007, and 2013 for Windows, Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, and multiple versions of Microsoft SharePoint Server. E-mails that are viewed or previewed using a default setting in Outlook allow the attacker to gain the same system privileges as the user who is currently logged in.
"Microsoft is aware of a vulnerability affecting supported versions of Microsoft Word," Monday's advisory stated. "At this time, we are aware of limited, targeted attacks directed at Microsoft Word 2010. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted RTF file using an affected version of Microsoft Word or previews or opens a specially crafted RTF e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook while using Microsoft Word as the e-mail viewer."
The advisory credited Drew Hintz, Shane Huntley, and Matty Pellegrino of the Google security team with discovery of the RTF memory corruption bug, which is formally cataloged as CVE-2014-1761. Microsoft has issued a temporary fix that configures Microsoft Office to prevent the opening of RTF files in supported versions of Microsoft Word. Users can also protect themselves against exploits by viewing e-mails in plain text. Monday's advisory said Microsoft may issue a permanent patch once an investigation into the vulnerability is completed.
The Microsoft advisory didn't say exactly who was being subjected to the attacks. The term "targeted attacks" is typically used to describe hacks that are directed against a specific individual or group of individuals, often as part of espionage campaigns targeting corporations or government agencies.
Post updated in the second paragraph to make clear not just version 2010 is vulnerable.

DÉJÀ VUE – MICROSOFT REPEATING IBM’S MISTAKES

Source: SharePoint Switzerland

It’s hard to believe, Microsoft actually could learn something from IBM. And it seems, they rather don’t.

In 1995 IBM purchased Lotus Development. At the time Lotus Notes was the dominating product in what then was called ‘Groupware’ (today we would call it Social Collaboration). Bill Gates always was known to be a big fan of Lotus Notes and beating up his engineers to come up with a “Notes-killer”. For the first few years after the take-over, the market and business partners  were happy, because IBM left Lotus alone. Lotus was flourishing and brought in a lot of money. The product got better and better and we (partners) could build better and better applications.

Then the unavoidable happened and IBM “integrated” Lotus. Still, things were ok. But then IBM overvalued their influence and impact, when a new strategy (famous words) was introduced to promote IBMs DB2 and JAVA-based products: Websphere was the new kid in town and IBM Workplace was supposed to replace Notes. I went to several trainings and could not help wondering what I missed – I just never was impressed… (must have been too stupid) … anyway … Workplace is history and some poor customers still are struggling with Websphere…

The real problem however was that Lotus Notes had become the ugly duck. Whoever promoted Lotus Notes was looked down at “… poor you, haven’t you seen the signs of the times?” The results were big question marks on clients faces. The uncertainty creeped in and undermined many commitments.

This was the atmosphere when Microsoft introduced SharePoint … and yes it has taken them many years to develop a serious product. SharePoint 2010 was by many considered the first really good version. 2013 was another big improvement. The Microsoft partner community is solid and has invested in training their engineers and consultants, created products, etc… all the good things, we’ve seen before with Lotus Notes (and other products). And since November 2012 it is clear that this is going to be history soon. By introducing the 1 TB limit (over the previous 200 GB limit) for SharePoint online (only!) a few days ago, Microsoft has made clear that they are serious about their Cloud strategy.

And similar to the uncertainties among Lotus/IBM partners and clients many years ago, these days it’s the Microsoft partners and clients who are getting nervous. IT Pros will have to learn a new skill set because Office 365 is a different beast, consultants will need a brain wash, because their skills for an on-premise infrastructure are more or less useless, Programmers need to dump their C# code and redo it all in JavaScript – and clients are wondering what to do. Basically, Microsoft is telling the world: “We are going there, like it or not”.

Like IBM back then Microsoft believes their position is strong enough and there really isn’t any competition (which was not true then and is not true today). And like IBM at the time Microsoft believes that everyone is going along with them … I doubt it, and we will see.

Error "Overflow" in IBM Notes Standard Client

I had the issue that 2 clients had a problem during creation of a calendar entry, opening mail, ...

They always received the error message "Overflow"

Some investigations later ( remove CACHE.NDK, ... ) I found this helpful link and I checked the NOTES.INI. During the upgrade of Adobe Reader to Adobe XI some modifications are made in the NOTES.INI:

;AddInMenus=scanezmulti.dll,D:\Apps\Office\Adobe\ACROBA~1.0\PDFMaker\Mail\LOTUSN~1\PDFMLO~1.DLL in notes.ini

After removing this line the error was gone.

Great thank to Adobe !!

How to check httpd.conf on IBM HTTP Server on Windows

Today I had some troubles with getting an IHS up and running. On Linux
there´s a tool where you can check the configuration file.

On Windows it quite simple:

=> Open a command line windows
=> Change to the IHS\bin folder
=> run httpd.exe

Then the problem in your configuration file will be shown ( for example => "character 'e' in line 12..." ) and
you can easily correct the issue.

How to stop the HTTP Server afterwards ??
=> Simply by pressing CTRL-C multiple times

The world's largest photo service just made its pictures free to use

Source: theverge.com

If you go to the Getty Images website, you'll see millions of images, all watermarked. There are more than a hundred years of photography here, from FDR on the campaign trail to last Sunday's Oscars, all stamped with the same transparent square placard reminding you that you don't own the rights. If you want Getty to take off the watermark, you'll have to pay for it.
"OUR CONTENT WAS EVERYWHERE ALREADY."
Starting now, that's going to change. Getty Images is dropping the watermark for the bulk of its collection, in exchange for an open-embed program that will let users drop in any image they want, as long as the service gets to append a footer at the bottom of the picture with a credit and link to the licensing page. For a small-scale WordPress blog with no photo budget, this looks an awful lot like free stock imagery.
It's a real risk for the company, since it's easy to screenshot the new versions if you want to snag an unlicensed version. But according to Craig Peters, a business development exec at Getty Images, that ship sailed long ago. "Look, if you want to get a Getty image today, you can find it without a watermark very simply," he says. "The way you do that is you go to one of our customer sites and you right-click. Or you go to Google Image search or Bing Image Search and you get it there. And that's what's happening… Our content was everywhere already."
Gettyembed
THE NEW EMBEDS STRIKE DIRECTLY AT SOCIAL SHARING
Looking at the pictures on Twitter, it's hard to disagree. Wildly popular accounts like @historyinpics can amass hundreds of thousands of followers with nothing but uncredited, unlicensed images, and since there's no direct revenue, there's little point in asking them to pay. At that scale, anything more expensive than free is a prohibitive cost. The new embeds strike directly at that kind of social sharing, with native code for sharing in Twitter and Tumblr alongside the traditional WordPress-friendly embed code. Peters' bet is that if web publishers have a legal, free path to use the images, they'll take it, opening up a new revenue stream for Getty and photographers.
The new money comes because, once the images are embedded, Getty has much more control over the images. The new embeds are built on the same iframe code that lets you embed a tweet or a YouTube video, which means the company can use embeds to plant ads or collect user information. "We've certainly thought about it, whether it's data or it's advertising," Peters says, even if those features aren’t part of the initial rollout.
THE DIGITAL SHIFT HAS BEEN HARD ON PHOTOGRAPHERS
The clear comparison is the music industry, which was hit hard by piracy in the '90s and took decades to respond. "Before there was iTunes, before there was Spotify, people were put in that situation where they were basically forced to do the wrong thing, sharing files," Peters says. Now, if an aspiring producer wants to leak a song to the web but keep control of it, they can drop it on Soundcloud. Any blog can embed the player, and the artist can disable it whenever they want. And as Google has proved with YouTube, it's easy to drop ads or "buy here" links into that embed. "We've seen what YouTube's done with monetizing their embed capabilities," Peters says. "I don't know if that's going to be appropriate for us or not." But as long as the images are being taken as embeds rather than free-floating files, the company will have options.
EMBEDS HAVE ENABLED A NEW KIND OF LINK ROT
Getty Images' profits haven't cratered like music conglomerates: its profits actually increased nearly $100 million from 2007 to 2011, thanks in part to digital licensing. Still, the digital shift has been hard on photographers, with professional stipends increasingly replaced by smaller payments to amateur or freelance photographers. Part of Peters' promise is that the new embeds will open up larger flows of money down the road.
The biggest effect might be on the nature of the web itself. Embeds from Twitter and YouTube are already a crucial part of the modern web, but they've also enabled a more advanced kind of link rot, as deleted tweets and videos leave holes in old blog posts. If the new embeds take off, becoming a standard for low-rent WordPress blogs, they'll extend that webby decay to the images themselves. On an embed-powered web, a change in contracts could leave millions of posts with no lead image, or completely erase a post like this one.
Still, such long-term effects are years away, if they happen at all. In the meantime, Getty Images is focused on the more immediate problem of infringement. "The principle is to turn what's infringing use with good intentions, turning that into something that's valid licensed use with some benefits going back to the photographer," says Peters, "and that starts really with attribution and a link back."

Domino 9.0.1: Bug with documents not appearing in categorized views

After upgrading to Domino 9.0.1 you may run into weird view problems where documents, especially response documents may not appear in categorised views.

Only “shift + F9″ will solve the problem temporarily, but as soon as documents are added to the database, the problem might occur again.
The issue has already been reported in LO78849 “DOCUMENTS DISAPPEAR FROM VIEWS AFTER UPGRADING TO DOMINO 9.0.1” (authentication is required to access the technote).

According to IBM Support, this issue has the highest severity and they are working on a fix. It’s supposed to be addressed in FP2 for Domino 9.0.1.

As a temporary workaround, IBM Support recommends to set MAX_PERMUTE_RECURSE=100000 in the server’s notes.ini.

This parameter which is new in Domino 9.0.1 and 8.5.3 FP6 has been introduced due to
SPR #KHAN87ZUTS and seems to be part of the root cause because

…the number of hierarchical responses that can be added to a given collection…

Shankar Venkatachalam published an application on OpenNTF which automatically removes "Dead Mails" from the MAIL.BOX of configured Domino Server.

The way those mails are removed is:

1) The application server first read it's configuration document, and take a connection to that server.

2) The application also reads the configuration document to understand, how many mail.box are available on the server. The application would work on all the mail.box , that were mentioned on the configuration document

3) It then connects to the configured servers, and open the mail.box , and read for the emails, which has the field value RoutingStatus=Dead. If a message on the mail.box has that field , then it considers that as a Dead Message, and take a copy of that message, before deleting it from the server.

4) The collected dead mails on all the servers, are available on the view “Purged Dead Mails”

5) The collected dead mails can be deleted periodically, or if administrator thinks that the dead mail is needed , he can move it back to the server."

Thanks a lot for this helpful tool. Nevertheless the cause for the dead mail has to be found and hopefully solved.
