IBM Notes Traveler and "iCal embedded" Calendar Entries

I had the issue, that appointments from an IBM Connections Community, which are embedded via an iCal link are not getting synched to a mobile device.

After opened a PMR I received a fix for IBM Notes Traveler 9.0.1 IF7 where those appointments also are synchronized to the mobile device.

So if you use the iCal feature for e.g. Community appointments you should open a PMR and reference to PMR 78198,010,618.

IBM ECM Plug-In in Notes 9 Sidebar

The users can browse and search in their ECM repositories using the same interactions as they already know from the IBM Content Navigator web application. They can also seamlessy work with the favorites they have defined on their IBM Content Navigator desktop.

The users can add or move emails to the ECM repositories using simple drag and drop operations. Furthermore they can copy attachments to the ECM repositories. With this features the users are able to both reduce the size of their Notes databases and can easily share relevant informations
with multiple people.

Please read all of the advantages in the attached PDF !!

Hide informations about private meetings from the Domino Resource Database

Thanks to Chris Miller for posting this very helpful information on SocialBiz.Org.

Private meeting information is showing up in the calendar entry in the Rooms and Resource database. Is there a way to prevent meetings that are marked as Private to not have the information show up in the Rooms and Resources database?

Unfortunately this is a known issue. The great news is there is a solution for this problem.  IBM has had a recommendation since 7.0.3 to place a server side notes.ini variable to place a new descriptor in the database so as to not show any potential private data from entries marked Private.

    RNR_MAKE_TOPIC_PRIVATE=1

This .ini setting causes any new "Private" entry to display in the R&R database as:
[** Private entry. The description is not available for display. **]

The subject of the reservation will stay private in the R&R database even when using the document's Properties dialog box to view the Subject field. The chair can see the Subject in the mail file entry.

The downside to this setting is that older entries already in the database are no affected. They will still show the private subject data. You could reset all private entries to public and redo them or just delete and make new private entries to have the RnR database update.

You should plan a time to restart the entire server for this change to take place. At least that is the recommendation of IBM. You could try restarting just the RnR task but there is no documentation that shows that will work successfully.

IBM releases social collaboration tool Verse

In the end of Q1/2015 IBM will release the "freemium" version of IBM Verse.

IBM has announced its new ‘freemium’ social collaboration Verse that uses built-in analytics to retrieve information from a range of services.

Verse integrates email, meetings, calendars, file sharing, instant messaging and social updates through a single collaboration environment.

It features ‘faceted search’ which enables users to retrieve information they’re seeking across all the types of content within their email.

Verse’s built-in analytics provide an ‘at-a-glance’ view that surfaces an individual’s most critical actions for the day.

By learning unique employee preferences and priorities over time, it provides instant context about a given project as well as the people and teams collaborating on it.

“The convergence of analytics, cloud, social and mobile technologies is not just impacting our personal lives, it’s profoundly changing how we work,” said Bob Picciano, Senior Vice President, IBM Information and Analytics Group.  “These forces are reshaping how people make decisions, create and share new ideas and collaborate across teams to get work done.  With IBM Verse, we challenged our design teams to use analytics to completely reimagine the social collaboration experience to focus on engaging people and driving outcomes, not managing messages and inboxes.”

Clients using IBM Verse will also have the future option to embed a Watson feature into their collaboration environment, which enables users to query Watson on a given topic and receive a direct reply with answers ranked by degree of confidence.

A beta release of the new offering will be available to select clients and partners in November 2014.  A freemium version delivered via the IBM Cloud Marketplace will be available in the first quarter of 2015.

Verse will also be offered as an app for both iOS and Android to ensure mobile users have the same experiences on the go as they do on their PCs.

If a user has installed Notes Traveler on a Google Nexus 9 device, and has also chosen the external storage option, then upgrading the device to Android 5.0 (Lollipop) can cause Notes Traveler to crash and become non-functional.
Content

This is a known, open issue with the Android 5.0 upgrade on Google Nexus 9 devices wherein the underlying database code identifies files as read only when they are not. This issue can cause Notes Traveler to crash and not work at all after the OS update.

To avoid this issue:

-- Option 1: Postpone updating the device to Android 5.0 until the issue is resolved.
-- Option 2: Prior to updating the OS, uninstall Notes Traveler and then reinstall choosing the internal storage option.

To recover from the issue:

For a device that has already updated and is experiencing crashes, uninstall Notes Traveler and then reinstall choosing the internal storage option.. To uninstall Notes Traveler, go to OS settings, security, Manage Device Administrators, and uncheck "IBM Notes Traveler", then go to the Application manager and uninstall the Traveler application.

This issue is being tracked here:

Twitter and IBM Form Global Partnership to Transform Enterprise Decisions

IBM News room: https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/45265.wss?ce=&ct=&cmp=&cm=&cr=&ccy=

SAN FRANCISCO and ARMONK, NY - 29 Oct 2014: Twitter and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a landmark partnership that will help transform how businesses and institutions understand their customers, markets and trends – and inform every business decision. The alliance brings together Twitter data that distinctively represents the public pulse of the planet with IBM’s industry-leading cloud-based analytics, customer engagement platforms, and consulting services.

The collaboration will focus on three areas:

Integration of Twitter data with IBM analytics services on the cloud
IBM plans to offer Twitter data as part of select cloud-based services, including IBM Watson Analytics, a new cognitive service in the palm of your hand that brings intuitive visualization and predictive capabilities to business users; and a cloud-based data refinery service that enables application developers to embed data services in applications. Entrepreneurs and software developers will also be able to integrate Twitter data into new cloud services they are building with IBM’s Watson Developer Cloud or IBM Bluemix platform-as-a-service.

New data-intensive capabilities for the enterprise
IBM and Twitter will deliver a set of enterprise applications to help improve business decisions across industries and professions. The first joint solution will integrate Twitter data with IBM ExperienceOne customer engagement solutions, allowing sales, marketing, and customer service professionals to map sentiment and behavior to better engage and support their customers.

Specialized enterprise consulting
IBM Global Business Services professionals will have access to Twitter data to enrich consulting services for clients across business. Additionally, IBM and Twitter will collaborate to develop unique solutions for specific industries such as banking, consumer products, retail, and travel and transportation. The partnership will draw upon the skills of tens of thousands of IBM Global Business Services consultants and application professionals including consultants from the industry’s only integrated Strategy and Analytics practice, and IBM Interactive Experience, the world’s largest digital agency.

“Twitter provides a powerful new lens through which to look at the world – as both a platform for hundreds of millions of consumers and business professionals, and as a synthesizer of trends,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and CEO. “This partnership, drawing on IBM’s leading cloud-based analytics platform, will help clients enrich business decisions with an entirely new class of data. This is the latest example of how IBM is reimagining work.”

“When it comes to enterprise transformation, IBM is an undisputed global leader in enabling companies to take advantage of emerging technologies and platforms,” said Dick Costolo, Twitter CEO. “This important partnership with IBM will change the way business decisions are made – from identifying emerging market opportunities to better engaging clients, partners and employees.”

With the development of new solutions to improve business decisions across industries and professions, IBM and Twitter will be able to enrich existing enterprise data streams to improve business decisions. For example, the integration of social data with enterprise data can help accelerate product development by predicting long-term trends or drive real-time demand forecasting based on real-time situations like weather patterns.

"IBM brings a unique combination of cloud-based analytics solutions and a global services team that can help companies utilize this truly unique data," said Chris Moody, Vice President of Twitter Data Strategy. "Companies have had successes with Twitter data – from manufacturers more effectively managing inventory to consumer electronic companies doing rapid product development. This partnership with IBM will allow faster innovation across a broader range of use cases at scale.”

IBM has established the world’s deepest portfolio in big data and analytics consulting and technology expertise based on experiences drawn from more than 40,000 data and analytics client engagements. This analytics portfolio spans research and development, solutions, software and hardware, and includes more than 15,000 analytics consultants, 4,000 analytics patents, 6,000 industry solution business partners, and 400 IBM mathematicians who are helping clients use big data to transform their organizations.

IBM Connections - Default settings for size limits

In IBM Connections there are 4 predefined policies regarding the size limits for personal files, Communities, ...

You simply can get those values entering the following commands in wsadmin:

wsadmin>execfile("filesAdmin.py")
Files Administration initialized.

wsadmin>FilesPolicyService.browse(sortOption="maximumSize", sortAscending="false", pageNumber=1, itemsPerPage=50)

Here´s the result:

{maximumSize=524288000, title=!Default for Personal Files, id=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000},
{maximumSize=524288000, title=!Default for Community Wikis, id=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000003},
{maximumSize=524288000, title=!Default for Non-Community Wikis, id=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000002},
{maximumSize=524288000, title=!Default for Community Files, id=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001},
{maximumSize=20971520, title=!Default for Guest Users, id=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000004}]

If you want to change the default size for the personal files for all users you simply can adjust the setting in the "Default for Personal Files" by entering the following command:

FilesPolicyService.editPersonalDefault(21474836480L)
 >> This would extend the limit from 500MB to 20GB
 >> If you set the value above 2GB, you have to append "L" to the new size limit

Desktop Settings - Settings and Managed Settings

Today I had to solve a problem at customer site. The customer did some modification of the Java settings, but when saving the desktop settings the modifications they have been reverted to the old values.

After some investigation the problem could be located and fixed ( it was quite easy ):

For example you want to enable the three settings and do not want those settings to be enforced in child policies via the "Miscellaneous" Tab:

If you save the desktop settings document, the values are reverted to "Disable" and to "Enforce".

Solution was quite simple:
Customer had some "Managed Settings" for publishing in the NOTES.INI of the client:

EnableJavaApplets=0, Enforce
EnableLiveConnect=0, Enforce
EnableJavaScript=0, Enforce

So if you save the document, the settings from the "Managed Settings" overwrite the settings in the "Miscellaneous" Tab. After removing them from the "Managed Settings" everything worked fine again ;-)

Folder wigdet does not get updated after migration to IBM Connections 5

I did a Side-By-Side migration of an IBM Connections 4.5 CR4 environment to Release 5.

Everything went fine except the folder wiget inside the Community Overview, which always shows the status "updating" like in the screenshot:

After opening a PMR and sending all the traces and logs I received the information, that this is an internal database bug and will be fixed in IC5 CR1 coming in week 39.

So hopefully this issue is getting fixed. But >> IBM Connections 5 CR1 is right ahead !!
