** UPDATE ** New language kits for Notes 9.0.1 are now available for download

An issue has been identified with the language kits released on December 3rd 2013 for IBM Notes 9.0.1 Social Edition (standard configuration), including "Notes client only" kits and "All clients" kits (Notes/Admin/Designer).

The issue will cause problems applying Interim Fixes (hotfixes) or Fix Packs. All affected kits are being removed from download sites. Root cause has been identified and testing is underway to verify new language kits to be posted by end of December.

What should you do?
  • If you have not installed a current kit, IBM recommends waiting for the new kits to be posted.
  • If you have already installed a current kit, once the new kits are available, it is recommended that you uninstall the current language kit and install the new kit.

Is the issue limited to Notes standard configuration?
Yes, the issue affects all current language kits for Notes 9.0.1 standard configuration, including "Notes client only" kits and "All Clients" kits (Notes/Admin/Designer). Language kits for Domino and Notes basic configuration are not affected.

Here you can go for an overview of the affected clients

Quick Tip: Server Controller Restart Issues

Thanks a lot to Chris Miller for sharing this article at socialbiz.

More and more of you should be utilizing the Server Controller feature of IBM Domino server installs for some greater control in function and access to working with the IBM Domino server task engines. However, if the IBM Domino server controller crashes or somehow gets abnormally terminated without a proper "quit controller" command being issued, you may not be able to restart it.

image

You may attempt to restart the entire operating system to get everything back to normal, but before you take that step, there is another quick trick you could try. After the controller crashes abnormally, navigate to the IBM Domino server data directory. Find the file called .jsc_lock, and delete that file.

It is a remnant lock file on the process that did not get removed due to the server  crashing.
Removing this file should allow you to restart the Server Controller normally again and put everything back to normal quickly.

IBM Sametime 9 Gateway cannot create DB2 connection for adding communities

After installing an IBM Sametime 9 Gateway I wanted to configure communities to link them. During the try to add the first ( the internal ) community, I always received the following error:

"Problem by accessing the data source"

So there was a problem for the gateway to establish a connection to the DB2 database. Although the test of the "GatewayDS" returned to be successful.

After opening a PMR ( 31608,999,618 ) I received the information that JMS has to be set for the STGW 9.

This can be done by running the following scripts:

Setting up JMS in Sametime Gateway

The Java™ Messaging Service (JMS) replaces the IBM® WebSphere® dynamic cache event notification mechanism, which was used in previous versions of WebSphere. Perform these steps after you have installed and registered the Sametime® Gateway Server or Sametime Gateway clusters.

About this task
If you are using a single server, set up JMS on the WebSphere Server on which the Sametime Gateway Server runs. If you are using a clustered environment, set up JMS on the deployment manager. You begin by creating the service integration bus, which is the virtual place where messages are exchanged. Use these steps to run the script to set JMS provider properties:

Procedure

    Restart the server or cluster.

For a single server deployment, restart the server.

For a clustered deployment, restart the Sametime Gateway cluster environment rather than each Gateway Server.
On the Gateway Server, navigate to the <profile_root>/bin directory.

For a single server deployment, the directory is <app_server_root>/profiles/RTCGW_Profile/bin.

For a clustered deployment, the directory is <app_server_root>/profiles/DM_Profile/bin.
Copy the gw_config_jms.py and gw_jms_tuning.properties files from the Sametime Gateway Server installation image in the postInstall directory to the /bin directory.
    Run the wsadmin script.

    AIX® and Linux

    ./wsadmin.sh -username user -password password d -lang jython -f gw_config_jms.py gw_jms_tuning.properties

    Windows

    wsadmin.bat -username user -password password d -lang jython -f gw_config_jms.py gw_jms_tuning.properties
    Restart the server or cluster.

For a single server deployment, restart the server.

For a clustered deployment, restart the Sametime Gateway cluster environment rather than each Gateway Server.

IBM reveals its top five innovation predictions for the next five years

Great article at venturebeat

IBM revealed its predictions for five big innovations that will change our lives within five years.

The IBM “5 in 5″ is the eighth year in a row that IBM has made predictions about technology, and this year’s prognostications are sure to get people talking. We discussed them with Bernie Meyerson, the vice president of innovation at IBM, and he told us that the goal of the predictions is to better marshal the company’s resources in order to make them come true.
“We try to get a sense of where the world is going because that focuses where we put our efforts,” Meyerson said. “The harder part is nailing down what you want to focus on. Unless you stick your neck out and say this is where the world is going, it’s hard to you can turn around and say you will get there first. These are seminal shifts. We want to be there, enabling them.”
In a nutshell, IBM says:
  • The classroom will learn you.
  • Buying local will beat online.
  • Doctors will use your DNA to keep you well.
  • A digital guardian will protect you online.
  • The city will help you live in it.
Meyerson said that this year’s ideas are based on the fact that everything will learn. Machines will learn about us, reason, and engage in a much more natural and personalized way. IBM can already figure out your personality by deciphering 200 of your tweets, and its capability to read your wishes will only get better. The innovations are being enabled by cloud computing, big data analytics (the company recently formed its own customer-focused big data analytics lab), and adaptive learning technologies. IBM believes the technologies will be developed with the appropriate safeguards for privacy and security, but each of these predictions raises additional privacy and security issues.
As computers get smarter and more compact, they will be built into more devices that help us do things when we need them done. IBM believes that these breakthroughs in computing will amplify our human abilities. The company came up with the predictions by querying its 220,000 technical people in a bottoms-up fashion and tapping the leadership of its vast research labs in a top-down effort.

What can IBM do to improve the standing of Lotus Notes Domino

An interesting question was posted on LinkedIn from Carsten Hellweger.

I would like to open a discussion about the current image problems IBM is facing with Lotus Notes.
I certainly hope, that some relevant IBM Lotus represantative will join or read the discussion.
Right now we are facing questions like:

• Is Lotus Notes dead or dying
• Should we migrate mail to MS Exchange or other
• Will we be the last to use Lotus Notes

We can all Point out various reasons why Lotus Notes is the better platform, but the users and especially the decision makers don't understand.
We are after all back to square one as around 2002 when IBM announced that Lotus Notes will be replaced by Websphere. We are 11 years down the road, still there and still IBM is not pointing out what the strength of Lotus Notes is but is still trying to run after the hypes (currently called social).
I think there is still a strong market for the product but we can only harvest it, if the image is right.
So what can IBM do?

Please come up with your suggestions.
